Behind Bad Luck- Superman. Video finally done!

It has been a long and also fun journey but I am happy to say that our music promo video is finally finished and done with. The end result after watching the video proved to have been worth all of the expensive journey's to London and filming outside in the cold. Everything came together exactly as planned with a few additional features which we added and last minute changes at the end to make it even more engaging to watch. Within the first 3hrs of the release of our music today we have already had 119 views, from who? I have no idea of but it reflects the quality of our music video.

Take time to watch our music video and I hope you enjoy it.

Evaluation 1; In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Behind Bad Luck- Superman

In our music video we have evidently used a variety of forms and traditional conventions in order to produce a fantastic music video. One of typical conventions displayed in our music video is the used of lip syncing by our led singer. When the lip syncing is done over and over again in each scene before it is spot on it ends up looking very effective as you can see in our music video. This form of convention is very important as if the lip syncing is not accurate in a music video then it ends up looking very unprofessional and fake, this is also a factory which cannot be hidden as the audience will easily spot this error out which will discourage them from watching the video or buying the CD. For such reasons, we made sure that we got the lip syncing spot on from each movement of the lips to facial expressions throughout the video to make it as real and possible

Slow motion lip syncing

We also used forms and conventions of real media products by having a narrative in our video. In almost every music video there is a story/message behind the video. Artists do this deliberately to say something, this could be relating to their personal lives or just a message they want to get across to the audience by the use of music. Our music video is also like this as it is all about a student who reunites with his childhood superhero Superman and pretends to be him by wearing a giant red cape and saving innocent lives.

Another typical form of convention which is evident in real music videos is the use of instruments. In regards to our genre being Ska the use of instrument is a traditional feature which is evident in a number of Ska music videos. In order to make our music video as realistic and possible we felt that it  was important that we followed this convention so that our video is an embodiment of all the qualities real Ska music videos have. This was one of the reasons as to why we added a band performance scene in our video to emphasis the idea that it is a traditional Ska music video.

Tom \(from our band)

Ska artist Ska-P

Here you can see the similarities in the use of instruments from professional Ska/Punk Spanish artist Ska-P with a band member of our own music video. This supports the idea that we have used real media products to help construct our own music video.

Andrew Goodwin a media specialist came up with an idea of there being six specific music video conventions. One of them is a clear link between the lyrics in a music video and the visual images displayed. Andrew Goodwin's theory is right in this case as you can see in many other music videos including our own music video. Our music video is illustrative, this is because she you see happening  in the video is said in the lyrics. This displays a relationship between the audio and visual supporting Goodwin's convention theory of a video to visual relationship.

Image of Tom being Superman, corresponds to the lyrics

Another of Goodwin's theory which he says is evident in music videos is a particular genre of music which has a particular characteristic. This convention is demonstrated in our music video as it is an embodiment of the typical boy band video. This supports Goodwin's convention theory as we have made a typical genre video.

Furthermore, Goodwin also recognised another convention which he felt was present in music videos. This consisted of the idea of there being an intertextual reference to something else during the course of the video. This convention is evident throughout our music video as you can see symbolic references to;

Connor walking out of the door Sherlock Holmes series was filmed

Close-up of Tom, referencing Sinead' O Connor's video- Nothing compares to you

Tom pretending to be Superman

This again supports Andrew Goodwin's theory in particular forms and convention being present in videos.

Another key convention we made sure we followed was to work within the Superhero genre. By doing this we have evidently followed the current trend as the majority of the popular films at the moment are in this genre such as big blockbusters films from the 'Big 6' from the lights of The Amazing Superman 2, Captain America and there is also a new X-Men film which is said to be coming out in the summer this year which is being spoke about everywhere from Twitter to magazine adverts. By us doing this it has enabled us to make a relevant music video target at the modern audience as many will find it appealing as they do to other Superhero based films.

The Amazing Spiderman 2

'Superman' AKA Tom

On the other hand, there are also particular conventions in Andrew Goodwin's theory which we have challenged via our music video. One of Goodwin's ideas says that there is always a voyeuristic treatment of the female body in videos. This convention has been challenged by our music video as this idea is not present. There is no reference what so ever throughout our music video to the sexual female body parts, this contradicts Goodwin's convention and proves that he's conventions are not compulsory in order to make a professional and successful video.

In conclusion, it is evident that we have used a lot of typical conventions to construct our music video. Most of these forms and conventions were done subconsciously as everything just seemed to come together after planning the basics for the video such as the costumes, locations, shot variations and storyboard.

Digipak

Our digipak can be seen to use forms and conventions of a professional album cover. In the majority of boy band covers it is typical for them to have all there faces displayed somewhere on the cover

This is the front cover of the previous X Factor winners JLS of there 2012 album called 'Evolution'. As you can see, all the faces of the band have been placed on each corner of the cover posing for the camera. Our music video can be seem to embody the same idea behind this cover as our front cover also displays all the members of our band together. This highlights the typical use of the band image convention.

Digipak front cover

At the back of our digipak we have all the tracks present in the CD and also details of record company including distribution and copy right information. This information is also on real digipaks which demonstrates our use of traditional packaging conventions

Back of JLS digipak
Back of our digipak

As you can see there is a strong similarity between the back of the pop band JLS's digipak and also our groups one.

The creation of our digipak from the images, designs and use of colours on the back cover is evidently looks like a tradition Ska band cover. This shows that we have used forms and conventions in our genre in order to appeal to our audience. This can be seen in the comparison between the famous Ska band 'The Specials' back album cover called 'Specials' with our digipak. As you can see the checkered design is evident on both products, this shows thats we have followed typical element within the Ska genre.

Back of 'The Specials' digipak
Back of our digipak

The six different panels in our digipak all participate in forming a specific image of our band. This can be via our use of background cover and also pictures. In five of our panels there is a black and white checkered pattern in the background behind the pictures. We deliberately did this in order to emphasis the idea that is a Ska digipak. This checkered background also gives an insight into what should be expected in the CD as if someone was to see this on a shelf they would immediately know that they will be purchasing Ska music. Another element which contributes in the band image is our choices of images. Again we made the images black and white to exaggerate the Ska theme .We also placed Tom (the lead singer) on the actual base where the CD is placed in order to highlight his importance in the band because he is the led singer. This contrasts with real digipak designs as artists also use specific forms to display an image of the artist.

This is a real digipak design of artist Jack Johnson. As you can see, the theme of nature is displayed in each panel, this is supported by the use of images with the leaves on the CD disc and tree on the top right of the digipak. This is similar to our digipak as we also have a key theme across our digipka which is Ska.

On the spin of the digipak we have the original band name and the name of the song. This feature is displayed on real  digipak covers.

We have not challenged the conversion of genres as we have stayed within the content we are working with which is Ska. This is evident in our digipak via the use of colour schemes and use of costumes displayed in the images our ourselves.

Magazine advert

Our magazine advert reflects the same ideas and image as our digipak. This can be seen in the use of images as the image displayed on the advert also present in our digipak. This displays a relationship between our digipak and magazine advert as it means that people wanting to buy our album can easily identify it on the shelves in their local HMW store because they will recognise the image from the adverting poster on the digipak cover. As well as this, there is also a relationship between both of our products via the same use of colour scheme. The images of the band members which is displayed on our digipak is in black and white and so is the checkered background. These ideas are reflect in our magazine advert as the background images is also in black and white along with the checkered design.

We have also developed our magazine advert by adding something's to it which are not common in all real magazine adverts. We had added a critical comment from a Rap representative 'Mojo' saying "Behind Bad Luck are super would be an understatement". As well as this we also added additional information on the Band's movement by writing across the middle of the advert "One tour through April and May". These additional features have developed our magazine advert making it different from other standard album/song adverts because we have made it more informative and pervasive giving people even more reasons to want to buy our album.

This is a real magazine advert from Hip-Hop artist Mr Hudson with his album 'Straight no Chaser'. As you can see, the advert for this album is very dull and plain with not a lot to offer as it states is the artist, the name of the album, the release date and a featuring track on the album. My groups magazine advert has developed forms and conventions in this real media advert as we have added logo's to inform people on the availability locations for our album, we've added a critical opinion and also ratings from newspaper company's on our album to make the advert more persuasive and eye catching. These key developments on the standard magazine advert will prove to be beneficial because offers more reasons for people to purchase the album/song CD.

Our magazine advert uses forms and conventions of a real advert from an album. On a magazine advert for a song or an album the release date and the location of its availability is always presented somewhere in the advertisement. As you can see in our magazine advert we have stated these as the album is "Out now" and there is a number of logo's at the bottom of the advertisement where the album can be located at from the lights of HMV and downloaded on iTunes. These features can also be seen in a real magazine advert as you can see in the UK trap artists Wretch 32 on his album 'WretchRospective'.

In his album advertisement the release date is stated as it was 'Out Monday 6th 2008' and available to purchase in HWV and the website '7Digital'. This shows that we have used typical magazine advert format to construct our own advert for out album.

This typical magazine advert format can also be seen due to the name of the artist (band in our magazine advert) written in a larger font compared to the other text along with the title of the album. This can be seen in our magazine advert and also in Wretch 32's advert for his album. This shows how we have used traditional forms of a real magazine advert to make our own advert.

Across our magazine advert and digipak there is not a real consistency in the use of font. This shows that we have challenged the typical forms and conventions of a real digipak and magazine advert as in a real digipak and magazine advert the use of font tends to stay consists across the two products.

In both of the artist's digipak presentation and magazine advert the same font has been used.

Audience theory research

The effect model

The effects model in one of the seven theories which we will be looking at in order to be able to answer the questions for our A2 exam. This theory consists of the idea that media conventions such as advertisements or music has an effects on the audience. The effects from this theory is said to be able to influence peoples behaviour and perception on things, for an example, rappers are well known for writing gang related music and present police in a bad way via the words they use to describe them. This is common amongst many rappers and what this theory says is that many teenagers (who are the target audience for such music) will also gain the impression that the police unit are bad people which can reflect in the way they act as it can make them more rebellious or even encourage  them to join local gangs. This theory is a linear communication method meaning media conventions such as advertisements and music directly inject messages into the audiences mind and they are powerless to prevent the influences.

If this theory is true audiences watching our music promo video would want to reminisce on there childhood days of wanting to be Superman and watching Superman movie and TV programmes. Our promo video may also make views aware of music genre Ska as it not a highly recognised/rated type of music. Our music promo may also encourage viewers to start listening to Ska music as our video to the song makes the music look fun and vibrate.

The uses and gratifications model

This theory says that audiences use media conventions such as TV to satisfy there own needs. It supports the idea that we are in control on how we want the media to influence us. This idea is exact opposite to the effect model as this theory states that the audience is active instead of passive. Because the audience is in control they can use the media in a beneficially way to gratify their needs and also pleasure themselves. The media can provide the audience with positive element such as escapism, e.g. On a PlayStation console playing Lord of War Craft, users can use this to escape from reality.

If this theory is put into practise on our music promo video then our video would be seen as a pleasurable element to the audience because our video is hilarious and energetic which the audience will find entertaining to watch.

Cultivation theory

This theory says that repeated exposure to a text will desensitise the audience. This means that audiences become less effected by media influences. However, this theory can be seen to be too simplistic as an personal experience from our media teacher was shared. He stated that when he was younger he loved watching horror films such as The Exorcist he could watch over and over again due to the thrill they offered. As time went on and he grow older he said now he cannot cope with the horrific images horror films offer and he find them ridiculously frightening therefore he doesn't watch horror films anymore. This evidently proves that the exposure to a specific text doesn't not necessarily desensitise the audience.

Two-Step Flow theory

This theory states that media effects are established through the personal influence of opinion leaders rather than the direct influence suggested by the effect model. The opinion leaders are normally someone or something which is well recognised, respected and popular. The social networking site twitter is a perfect example of this as many people follow celebrity's and other icon figures. These people will tweet about whatever topic they wish to share with their followers, these tweets will influence followers especially the ones who look up to them. Such opinionated ideas then get spend out as people tell their friends and family which is how assumptions are made on the topic which is not directly from the media.

Inspired by Sinead O'Connor 'Nothing compares to you'

Sinead O'Connor's single 'Nothing compares to you' was originally a song written and composed by singer and songwriter Prince as part of his project 'The family'. The Irish singer O'Connor then made a cover to the song in 1990 as her second single in her studio album and made thousands of profit from the single. The music video to the single was very simple as it consisted of a head shot of O'Connor singling through the majority of the video, but as simple as it seems it was also very effective as it went well with the concept of the song because it displayed O'Connor's emotional distress and as an audience watching you can almost feel the pain and heartbreak in her face as she sings. This creates a connection between viewers and the artists making each line in the song more passionate and believable. O'Connor's facial expressions and signs throughout the video makes it even more realistic and entertaining to watch. From watching this video me and the other members in my group became inspired by this and used ideas behind the video into our own music video such as the steady head shot and exaggerated facial expressions. This ended up as a successful aspect in our music video as it didn't just look good but it increases our variation of shots and shows the examiner that we have really thought about our use of shots.

Audience feedback of rough cut

We are finally close to finishing our music video 'Superman' by Behind Bad Luck, there are just minor adjustments which need to be make. This will be done in our media lesson tomorrow so our video will fully completed this week! thank God. One of our media teachers and two of our class members have had a look a look at our rough cut and made some interesting comment which we act on as much as we can. One of the comments made was regarding one of the scene in London when we are dancing in Westminster Bridge about 2:50 into the video. It was highlighted that we needed more alternating shots as there was just a long footage of that one scene for about 50 seconds which was why we wrote 'Placeholder' across the footages which we're looking to change. Our audience watching this rough cut said the long footage "Killed the ending a bit" because it made the video drag and look dull. In light of the comment we will alternate the shots to another location such as the band performance scene. This will make the minute or so of the video just as engaging as the rest of the video with the variety of shots well will look to add. Furthermore, at the beginning of the video after watching it back a few times we realised that the wind from the background when Tom was sitting on the swing made that short footage sound very unprofessional and mediocre. In our next editing session we will mute this sound so that it blends in more with the other footages which are followed after the part with Tom sitting on the swings. Another element which was spotted in our rough cut is a moment in the video near to the end were the lip syncing is off. It was good that this was spotted as we did not even notice it, now that we are aware of this we will act on it tomorrow when editing, this should be a minor amendments as all we will have to do is move the sound track. Apart from these improvement aspects all of our viewers overall commented that our video was very "Interesting to watch" with "Good humour". Such comments was a relief as it reassured me that all of our efforts filming and editing wise have gone to good use.

Digipak Preparation

With our digipak we are looking to make it as symbolic as possible. In order to do this we are going to add as much Ska associations on the covers and also real images straight from our music video. This will be very effective because it will show that it is all our own work and that we have thoroughly thought about the best way to present our music video. On a side or multiple sides in our cover expect their to be a sort of black and white checkered background as a base which we will put a variety of images, texts ad designs on. We will try to make these as relevant as possible in terms of saying something about the music video. When doing this we will not try and make the ideas we're trying to display too complex. I personally find that very annoying and pointless because many musicians album covers look meaningless as after listening to the songs on the album the relevance to the cover designs appear to be nonexistent. I believe that it is important for there to be a relation between the cover and the song(s) in the CD otherwise there is no real point of the cover if it is not giving the audience a taste of the song(s) in the CD so that they have an idea on what to expect before purchasing.

Ideas in relation to genre and band

I used onetruemedia.com to put together a group of images from google and also real life images we took when out looking for filming ideas. These images have a relationship with the type of genre we hope to make our music video on and are also an embodiment of ideas which the band display from what I know via research.

Illustrate audience research findings using Wordle

I have used the website Wordle to put together a variation of words and phrases which I think the audience would like a music video to consist of. I have based these ideas via the responses I received from my survey monkey questionnaire and some of the ideas stated in the focus group activity.

Famous album analyse

London rap artist DVS has released his new album called 'London Boy American Dreaming'. Lately I can't stop but listen to this album, it is that good, after looking at the description objective for this post this album was the first to pop up in my head because the cover is very significant in saying something to the audience, also has a relationship with the songs and the concept of the album is very clear by just looking at the cover which I thought was very important as a lot of album covers these days are very complex in the message it try's to portray, this album displays otherwise and brings things back to basic but also in an effective way.

The font used in the cover is very eye catching and displays elements of originality with the way it has been written sharply. Furthermore the way the text has been written across the middle of the cover makes it even more significant because it is the centre of attention, this presentation is very important and effective because without looking at the images on the cover the title alone already gives implications as to what the album will be about. This relationship between the title and songs on the album shows us how relevant every piece on the cover is, it also shows the audience that the album has been well thought about. The colour scheme used in the text is also look really good as it makes the whole writing stand out more. His name is DVS and the name of the album is London Boy American Dreaming; this written text has been separated via the use of font size and the colour scheme gold and white. This attribute can be seen to be important as it there was not a change in the colours unfamiliar viewers can easy miss interpret and thing the whole line is the artist name or name of the album.

The use of images on the cover of the album are all significant in saying something to the audience. As well as this they also look very interesting and engaging especially with the use of fade in merging all three images of Big Ben, the artist and the American flag together. The way the artist has been placed in the middle amount the other two footages emphasis the idea again of something being the centre of attention, in this case the artist is spread out through the centre of the page which show us his relevance in the album. The use of the image of Big Ben in the background is also significant in the whole album because it is an iconic representation of London. If you look at the artist's sunglasses, on the left eye you can see the town Brixton written. This is significant because it shows us where the artist is from which is in Brixton, this corresponds to the title of the album stating 'London Boy'  as Brixton is in London which he is clearly proud of it and also songs within the album such as 'Brixton' and 'Different kind'. On the right hand side you can see an image of the American flag and on the artists right eye in his glasses an image of the state of liberty. This is effect because it displays ideas to the other half of the message behind the album. This tells us that America is where he would like to be in, this also corresponds to the title of the album as it states 'American Dreaming' which is very much self explanatory in the aspirations in the future.

Last day of filming!

Yesterday was our last day of filming which was such a relief as all the jorney's to London were proving to be very costly. Yesterday we went to Tower Hill to film some more group footages, we felt that it would be important for us to vary our filming locations rather than going back to Piccidally Circus. Tower Hill proves to have been a good idea as it was very busy with lots of tourists and had a number of iconic landmarks such as the house of parilment were mayor Boris Johnson works in. We also managed to record some footages of the lead singer Tom singing with 'The Shard of Glass' in the background. As little as it may sound we felt that it this will make a good contribution to the rest of the footages we have, it also emphasises the idea that we have really thought about the locations we film at rather than just focusing on following the storyboard shots.

The weather yesterday wasnt as bad as it has benn in our past filming sessions. Although, it was very cold and windy but it could have been worse such as if it rained which lucky it didnt even though the forecast stated that there would be light showers. As well as visiting Tower Hill we also went to Westminister Bridge where we simply filmed our led singer Tom fully in his acting role of Superman. We filmed some footags of him running around Town doing silly things pretending to be Superman and annoying the rest of the band members with his crazy imagination. We got lots of footages for this so that we will be left with excess footages which we can use if we run out of shot variaton whilst editing.

Overall I can definatly say that I have enjoyed the filming stage. It has not all been constant hardwork but me and the rest of the team have had some hilrious moments during our trips to London. We are looking to add a 'Behind the scene' video or if not a post of photos of lots of random highlights from our filming sessions to display a glimpse of some of the things we got up to outside of the music video prepartion so look out.

Analyses of student magazine advert

The 'four star' rating of the single at the top of the advert is effective because it shows viewers that the single has been highly rated meaning it must be good. This is good because it will persuade viewers to want to buy the single as it has been described as "breath-taking" by the newspaper company The Guardian. At the bottom of the advert the release date and places where people can obtain the single is evident; "Release date 14.02.12" and has specialist music stores HMV and iTunes logo. This is a key feature across all album/CD magazine adverts so this magazine advert by past student Amanda has displayed traditional features.

The colour scheme used in the advert is black and white which displays an old fashion theme. This correspond with elements in the image as she has a sort of cotton clothing around her neck, peal earrings and short hair. This is how women in the olden day looked like which emphasis the idea of the whole old fashion image. The title displayed at the top of the magazine advert has been written in red, the release date has also been written in red and the shade of the girls lipstick on the cover is also red. This creates a blend in colours which makes the whole advert look more unified because there is a relationship between the text used and the image. This makes the whole advert look more appealing because if the text was another colour such as green or blue the advert would look very odd and stand out in a obscured way.

The way the image of the student who made the music video covers the majority of the magazine advert is symbolic in saying something about the single. This informs viewers that she is the centre of attention who the whole music video is about. This gives us a greater understanding to the single as viewers will now know who the song and events within the video will be about. The way the artist's face is bang in the middle of the page reinforces her superiority in the music video. It makes her impossible to miss and will subconsciously catch views eyes.

Magazine Advert Analysis

This magazine advert for a music album is very creative in the way everything has been presented. The use of font in on the magazine is very original, artistic as well as bond. In comparison with the other magazine advert this use of creativity makes the "Drive By Truckers Go Go Boots" album cover look boring. The concept throughout the "Iron and Wine" advert is lines which displays very abstract images, it is filled with lines of different colours which has been used to create effective patterns and shapes making the album cover look more eye catching and unmissable. The use of colours makes certain aspect in the advert stand out more than others such as the orange lines used to draw the man's blazer. This is a symbolic attribute used deliberately to draw attention to the man showing us that he has some sort of correspondence to the album. The images of the peacocks in the background brings a sense of mystery and confusion as to what relevant they have and questions the artist for using such animals out of every other option. This can be seen to be effective because it gives the audience a reason to be more interested in the album because of such strange attributes.

Both of these magazine adverts are very different in the way they have been presented and the ideas behind the whole image. However both magazine adverts have some similar elements such as . displaying the release date/ availability of the album. The album by Iron and Wine advert displays their album to be "Out now"which informs people that they can go and buy the album now. The album Drive By Truckers Go Go Boots also displays an avalaiblity date of the album as it states that it is out Frebruary 14th. These similar attributes are common across all magazine adverts for music because it is a vital piece of information ti inform people otherwise they wont know when they can buy the album.

The album 'Drive' by Truckers is very comic in the way the images and font in the writing has been presented. This could be a symbolic aspect to the music album as it could indicate that the album is targeted at the younger audience. Furthermore, the title contracts with the image displayed on the advert  as there is an image of a women in boots and the albums title is 'Go Go Boots'. This shows us that the presenters have really thought about the images and titling before presenting it on the magazine advert. The album also has a picture at the top of the magazine advert of the front album cover, the other album by Iron and Wine does not have this on their advert. This is effective and useful because it shows people how the album looks like on display in stores so that viewers can easily identify the album.

Proposal as to how to expand, broaden audience/ increase sales

In order to make a music video profitable it is important that the public are aware of the product. In order to do this it is important to do some research and think about the best way to advertise the product with the greatest chance of increasing profit margins so that it doesn't result to being a waste of time and money. In addition to this, as well as making people aware of the product it is more important that a specific target audience is being targeted. This is because this section of people are the ones who will most likely by the CD because there are interested in maybe the genre evident on the music. For an example, if an a rap album was being released by an artist in order for the artist to to be in the best position in order of receive profit is to make the younger generation aware of the album, more specifically the male section because they are ones who would find such genre appealing.

In order to connect with this section of people specific media conventions should be used such as advertising the album on social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. These networking sites are very popular amongst young people especially Twitter, every single one of my friends both in and outside of school has Twitter which highlights how popular it is.

Being a rap artist i would also want to display display posters advertising my album on or near public transports such as on buses or displayed underground in order to get a broader audience to see the releases of the album so that they may want to purchase it if the find the looks of it appealing even though they may not be part of the target audience category. This will contribute in helping the artist broaden there audience In order for the album to be appealing to people once they know about the product there must something about the product that makes it stand out from other CD's. This aspect can be achieved by making the album digipak as eye catching and attractive as possible, something iconic that will stick into people's heads and gives them a reason to want to buy the album by looking at it. One of my favourite rap album cover is from an American rapper called 'Meek Mill' and the album is called 'Dream chasers 2'. I like the cover for this album due to the use of special effects, it has helped made the cover look extremely eye catching especially with the use of colours, theme and style of text font used.
