Another example of a young talent who porgessied form the bottom in the music industry is Emil Nava. He began as a runner for film production companies and worked with the lights if Blink prodcution. He is no successflu as he is a freelance for OB Management.
After working as a runner graduate as Assistant Director where he would manage the video shoots. He signed to Acedmey - who are the biggest music video prodcution company. He then worked for 'Between the Eyes' and now works mainly for 'Praise'
Emil has now begun to make adverts, which generally have a far higher budget and production value but which allow for less creative freedom
At his busiest Emil has made 24 music videos in one year. When he began shooting videos for independent lables budget would be as low as £5,000 to £10,000. His most expensive video to date has been for Jessie J and the budget was £160,000
Emil's first budget was for the band 'Kid British' and the track 'Our House'. This had a budget of £20,000 and was filmed in Manchester where the casts were literally the local people. This took only a day to film, 2/3days for editing and 10 days pre-production.This displays the very little timescale involved.
The OB Management work as an agents for music video directors. their particular aim is to nurture talent as potential professional artists, work with production companies, work with record labels and match the right directors to the right artists.
Some of the production companies that OB work with are
- Pulse films
- Rocket
- Agile films
- Friends
- Wonda
Another Professional artist who Emil Nava had worked with is the female singer Paloma Faith, Emil contributed in the success of her music video 'Picking up the pieces' as he was the director. This video had a budget of £80,000. The single was released on the 5th April 2012, it entered the UK single charts at number 7 making it Paloma's highest charting single i the UK to date and her first top 10. The video itself is very old fashion due to the in the Paloma and the other actors are presented and the location of video as it is in some sort of castle. Paloma potrays a woman who is an unstable relationship with her boyfirned. As the video progresses it shows Paloma's relationship crumbing and becomes wax-like.
Emil Top tips include:
- Using extreme close up on faces wherever possible
- Do not shoot whole of video in medium shot/long shot
An example of this is Sinead O'Connor 'Nothing compares to you' where sam shot has been used throughout making it not engaging to watch.
