In many music video's typical stereotype is display via the artists, actors and actresses in the music video. To be more specific women in music video's are always sexualised due to their loose costumes and the use of camera shots such as extreme close-ups. These women that are in such music videos tend to black Caribbean/Latino, this use of foreign actresses are used because the they tend to have larger thighs, breasts and the ability to move there bodies in a sexual way. Many female artists show off these attractive elements in order to increase there fan base as many teenage/adult women would want to look like them whilst many teenage/adult men would won't to see more of their nudity and get with them. Pop video's can be seen to have become more explicit as time progresses, more modern day videos consist of half naked women, this can mostly be seen in rap videos. Nicki Manaj's music video 'Beez in the trap' is a perfect example of the stereotypical view in which the black ethnicity women are said to present themselves in music videos as she presents herself as a very sexy women.
Rap can be seen to be dominated by the black ethical culture, e.g. Snoop Dog, Rick Ross, Kayne West. These rappers are well known for showing off their wealth in their video's by displaying big cars, money and expensive clothing. You will also find these rappers surrounded by half naked women. These rappers do this in order to show that they are living the high life with all of lives luxuries. These rappers also tend to display relations/ involvement to gang warfare as in some music videos real weapon's are used as props. This can be seen as a territorial act as they do this to represent there region they live in.
Because of this stereotypical judgements are made that all black male figures are like this and have been given a bad name. This is supported by the 'The Observer' newspaper as Ikamara Larasi mentions some views on what is being said on black people "Come from a broken home... and its likely I'm homophobic. I probably know criminals if am not one myself". These views are racist and such music videos contribute as the reason for this.
Yes a fascinating topic Dapo. How easy it is for makers of pop videos to fall into the trap of stereotyping and reinforcing negative images.
